• What subjects are included in the entrance exam?

Applicants who wish to study Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy in English at Plovdiv Medical University have to sit an entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry. In addition, applicants must cover B1 level in English language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This can be done by presenting a valid language certificate or a certificate issued by the Department of Languages and Specialised Training from a medical university in Bulgaria. Please keep in mind that applicants who are citizens of countries with English as an official language do not need to take part in the English exam.

• What is the format of the exam?

The entrance exam for Plovdiv Medical University is conducted online. Each section of the exam (Biology, Chemistry and English) looks different – this means applicants will face multiple-choice and open-ended questions. • When are the entrance exam dates in 2023? Is a retake possible?

The entrance exam dates are as follows: 25 April, 16 May, 20 June, 18 July, 29 August.

Additionally, there is a date for applicants to retake the exam, if they want to: 19 July. This date is only for students who sat the exam on 25 April, 16 May, 20 June or 18 July. People who sit the exam in August will have no opportunity to retake the exam.

• How much is the entrance exam fee? How do I pay the exam fee and when do I register for the exam?

The entrance exam fee is 200 EUR. The fee for the retake exam is 300 EUR.

The fees can be paid via bank transfer or by card payment (online).

Keep in mind that the registration must be done at least a week prior to the entrance exam. However, if all exam spots are taken, the registration will close earlier – this is why applicants should proceed with registering for the exam at an early stage of their application.

• How are the exam sections graded and how does one get a study place? 

The Bulgarian grading scale goes from 2 (fail) to 6 (excellent). This grading system applies to the Biology and Chemistry exam section. As for the English language exam at Plovdiv Medical University – it will be graded as pass or fail.

Candidates will be ranked according to their high school grades and exam results. The ranking comes out on 12 September 2023 on the university’s website. The maximum score is 42.00 and it includes the high school grades in Biology and Chemistry of the applicant (also graded from 2 to 6) as well as the entrance exam grades in Biology and Chemistry (multiplied by three). 

Applicants must pass all exam sections, have a minimum of 26 points and submit the full set of needed application documents on time in order to be considered for admission. However, they still need to be included in the ranking of the top students in order to get a study place. Usually, there are 300 places for international students who wish to study Medicine, 120 – for Dentistry and 50 for Pharmacy.

• When do the entrance exam results come out?

The entrance exam results usually come out around a week after the entrance exam. The grades are not subject to revision.

• I was accepted to study at Plovdiv Medical University. What’s next?

People who got a study place at Plovdiv Medical University must enrol between 13 and 27 September 2023. The academic year for Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in English starts on 2nd October 2023.
