I want to study in Bulgaria - what are the university requirements?

Each university in Bulgaria has different entry requirements. In any case, you must be fluent in English, Bulgarian or the language the specialty is taught in. You will most likely have to present a certificate that proves your language skills. If you study in Bulgaria in a language different than Bulgarian, don't worry - you don't have to speak it. It is highly likely that your academic year starts with a basic course in Bulgarian language. The teachers will teach you some basic phrases so that you are able to ask for directions, greet people in Bulgaria etc.

Also, another university requirement in Bulgaria is that you have completed your secondary education. You are not allowed to study a Bachelor's or Master's program in Bulgaria if you cannot provide a copy of your high-school diploma that is translated and legalized. Inter HECS offers translation and legalization services! Of course, it is not a problem to show these documents right before the start of the academic year - university staff are well-aware that it takes time until your diploma is issued (if you complete your secondary education in June, let's say). Also, the academic year at some universities in Bulgaria starts in February so you will have more time to collect the necessary certificates for your application to Bulgarian universities.

Sometimes, you have to sit an admission test if you wish to study in Bulgaria. Usually, an entrance exam is required in the field of medical science (entry test in Biology and Chemistry, sometimes only Biology) as well as arts (e.g. a drawing and a Maths exam for people who want to study Architecture).

How much does it cost to study in Bulgaria?

The tuition fees in Bulgaria are quite affordable so people don't spend much in this regards if they study in Bulgaria. As mentioned above, tuition fees for specialties in the medical field in Bulgaria are about 4000 Euro per semester. If you study something else, tuition fees may vary but they are not likely to be more than 4000 Euro per academic year. As the academic year is about 10 months, this means that you will spend about 200 - 800 Euro a month for your university. However, keep in mind that tuition fees are usually paid in two installments so it is not possible to pay the above-mentioned sum every month.

If you already study in Bulgaria, you know that the living costs in Bulgaria are very cheap. It won't come as a surprise if you spend only 300 Euro a month for a modern apartment in the city centre of the biggest Bulgarian cities. Eating in restaurants is not expensive as well - a three-course menu is about 15 Euro per person. Am I allowed to apply for a student loan if I study in Bulgaria?

If you are a full-time student in Bulgaria and you are below 35 years old, usually, you are allowed to apply for a student loan in Bulgaria. However, it is entirely up to the University whether they will accept it. For instance, Sofia Medical University do not allow student loans so foreign citizens must pay the tuition fees by themselves (8000 Euro per academic year). In comparison, it is possible to apply for a student loan for some universities such as Plovdiv Medical University. Nevertheless, the acceptance rate for a student loan is not very high.

Applying for a student loan in Bulgaria goes through a bank. Applicants can submit their documents to several banks. Some of the documents include a proof that you are a full-time student in Bulgaria as well as a list of your grades and a declaration issued by the University that you have passed all of your exams.
